Northern Seafood/Sjófiskur is one of the leading producers in Iceland on cod and haddock, specializing in line caught fish for international markets. Supervision over the entire production process is what allows us to guarantee world class quality fish with excellent service and delivery. Cod

Gadus morhua

Cod

Cod is the most popular fish in Iceland. Large, greedy and rather fast growing fish and therefore has great impact on other marine species in Icelandic waters. The cod can grow to be quite large, or up to 180 cm long. Common size is much smaller, or in the range of 50-80 cm long. Each fish can weigh from 1 to 15 kg.

Haddock

Haddock

The Haddock is a rather large codfish, usual size is between 50 and 65 cm long, but the largest individual caught in Icelandic waters measured 113 cm. It is found in abundance all around Iceland. During cold periods it is rather rare in the colder waters off the north coast, but in warmer periods it can be more common in the north than in the south.

Saithe

Saithe

The Saithe is a large codfish, usually between 70 and 110 cm long , but the largest individual caught in Icelandic waters measured 131 cm. It is found all around Iceland, but is rather in the colder waters to the north and east of the country. The saithe can be described as benthopelagic fish.

Golden redfish

Golden Redfish

The golden redfish is one of the most common and commercially important fish in Icelandic waters. It is commonly from 35 to 40 cm long although bigger, and older, individuals of up to 100 cm have been measured. Golden redfish is found all around Iceland on various bottom types but he main fishing grounds are at the edge of the continental shelf at 200 to 400 m depth south and west of Iceland.

Ling

Ling

The ling has a long slender body that can reach 2 metres in length; in adulthood, it is generally a deep-running fish, spending much of its life at depths of 100 m or more; younger fish are found at shallower depths.

Greenland halibut

Greenland halibut

The Greenland halibut (also called black halibut) is a deep-water species, mainly found in the cold waters to the west, north and east of Iceland. The Greenland halibut is a large flatfish and can reach up to 1.2 m in length. It has a dark grey colour on both sides and can be found over a wide depth range from 200 to 2,000 m depth, but usually below 400 m.

Arctic charr

The Arctic char lives in seas and fresh waters in Iceland as is one of the northernmost living fishes in the world, found all around the Arctic. Arctic char is a salmonoid fish, although it is smaller than salmon. It has an oblong body, a small head and a red belly in the spawning season. The species is well suited for aquaculture, where it reaches market size (300 – 2000 g) 15-30 months after hatching.

Salmon

The Atlantic salmon lives in Icelandic rivers and oceans. However, there is a general ban on marine salmon fishing in Icelandic waters and only a fixed amount of salmon is caught for sport in Icelandic rivers. Our salmon is farmed at optimal conditions where the fish have room to swim in spacious sea cages where it reaches market size (ca. 4-5 kg) about three years after hatching.

Catfish

Catfish

The catfish is a large sized, rather long fish, usually around 50 to 60 cm long, but the largest individual caught in Icelandic waters measured at 125 cm. It is found all around Iceland, but is most common off the West Fjords peninsula in the west. It has enormously strong jaws and teeth it uses for crushing its food which is mainly shellfish and echinoderms. Catfish mostly occurs on mud or sand bottoms at depths between 40 to 200 m."

Plaice

Pleuronectes platessa

Plaice

Plaice is a medium sized flatfish. It has smooth skin and is easily recognized by the red or orange spots on the otherwise dark back, while the underside is white. The maximum recorded size in Icelandic waters is 85 cm, but the usual size in catches is from 30 to 50 cm.Plaice is common all around Iceland from the seashore to 200 m depth, on sandy or muddy bottoms.
